4 Advantages of Tefzel ETFE Film for a Greenhouse Covering

Posted by Mack Hendrick on Jul 29, 2014 2:35:00 PM

Based on our previous blog post, “It’s Easy Being Green with Tefzel® ETFE: 8 Green Properties,” it is evident that Tefzel ETFE film is the best choice for a greenhouse covering. No other material comes as close to the Tefzel ETFE film in creating a sound greenhouse effect. Before we delve into the advantages of using Tefzel ETFE film in building a greenhouse, it is important to know about the greenhouse effect. We’re not talking about on a global scale, but in an actual greenhouse.

Creating a controlled greenhouse effect is the most practical method to use when cultivating protected agriculture. It allows us to modify the natural environment to protect the plants from unfavorable environmental conditions, achieving optimum plant growth and yield. A greenhouse effect works primarily by allowing sunlight to warm surfaces inside the structure, but then prevents absorbed heat from leaving the surface. Among other elements, the selection of the right type of cover material plays an important role in maintaining the overall equilibrium of the greenhouse. In order to achieve the required greenhouse effect within the structure, the main attributes to consider about the covering material include its physical properties of solar radiation transmission and energy conservation, durability and optical stability, as well as its construction, maintenance, and operational requirements.

Tefzel ETFE film, when compared with other traditional covering materials such as glass and plastic, provides the following advantages:

  • Tefzel ETFE film’s total transmittance (direct plus diffuse) is approximately 95% for a single layer and 90% for a double layer (better than other covering materials).
  • Tefzel ETFE film is resistant to ultra-violet radiation, which is the primary cause of degradation of the physical properties of other covering materials.
  • Tefzel ETFE film can last for over 20 years without reduced performance.
  • Tefzel ETFE film is self-cleaning (due to its non-stick surface) and because of this it doesn’t attract mold, dirt, and debris—all of which further enhance performance.
